For 200 years, the historic home at the heart of Vergennes Grand has been adorned with Italianate Style Corbels, an architectural detail that provides support. Inspired by those Corbels, our staff, their training and experience, our therapeutic programming, and architectural design all come together to create a supportive and dignified home for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, caring for your loved one with the respect, dignity and the support they deserve.

The neighborhood is purpose-built to assist staff and residents. The design is an “open” plan that provides staff maximum visibility in the core area, where residents can navigate independently, reducing sources of frustration. The internal walking path includes dining and living rooms, a TV lounge, interactive art, life-skill stations, and a sunroom leading to the secure outdoor garden.

The Corbel Neighborhood provides a proven model of care in a state-of-the-art setting. Our approach is called Habilitation Therapy, developed by the MA/NH Alzheimer’s Association, emphasizing active treatment of dementia symptoms by focusing on a person’s remaining abilities. The aim of habilitation therapy is not to restore people with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, to what they once were (i.e., rehabilitation), but to maximize their potential at any point by creating opportunities for positive emotion throughout each day.

An important aspect of the program is our relationship with each resident’s family.  Regular conferences keep family members involved in their loved one’s care.  The knowledge and insight provided by families are central to preparing a personalized care plan.   We believe in caring not only for our residents, but also for their families.  

While memory loss creates difficult changes, life can still be enjoyed.  Our caregivers have been carefully selected and trained in the care of individuals with memory disorders.  Structured daily programs help residents stay active and socially connected.  By focusing on their abilities, rather than their disabilities, each resident’s self-esteem and a sense of dignity can be renewed.
